Sugar beet harvest nears end

October 25, 2008

Moorhead, Minn. (AP) — American Crystal Sugar Co. is wrapping up its sugar beet harvest in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota.

Company officials say yields might match the record 25.5 tons per acre set two years ago.

Growers planted 425,000 acres of beets last spring, and had about 420,000 acres to lift by harvest time. That's the lowest in more than a decade. In recent years the co-op has averaged 500,000 acres.
