Outdoors council prepares for action

St. Paul, Minn. — The Lessard Outdoor Heritage Council met for the first time Monday.

The governor and legislative leaders appointed the twelve members of the council.

The members spent three hours discussing how to structure the group, learning about Minnesota's open meeting laws, and other housekeeping issues.

Wayne Enger is a former president of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association. He said people will be watching to make sure the legislature does not try to use the new money for existing programs.

"I guess it'll be our job, and the people out there, the watchdogs, the citizens of Minnesota, to make sure that doesn't happen."

The council has 120 days to choose its first set of projects to recommend to the legislature.
